Holidays = Excuses to Make Stuff

Oh dear, oh dear. My trip to San Francisco this past weekend has resulted in super sleepy eyes every day this week.

It was well worth it, but still, no bueno! Sleepy eyes and a sore throat to boot. What the heck. But, being the positive person that I am, I can say that the one (and possibly only) good thing about being so sleepy is how my sleepy state makes everything seem really funny. These spontaneous bouts of silliness I am experiencing are definitely helping me with a new blog project I am working on with a friend of mine. It’s going to be fun, informative, but mostly just ridiculous.

Vintage 4th of July Palette from COLOURlovers

Hey! It’s a holiday weekend?  Yeah it is! You and I both know that crafters love nothing more than a good holiday. Holidays = excuses to make stuff. For realz. For the past few years I’ve been aching to dress up as Uncle Sam for the 4th of July. I just might attempt it this year. Last year I was let down by the always reliable Party City. No 4th of July decor WHATSOEVER. What’s up with that, Party City? I shouldn’t be going there anyway. Bad Tati!

But, don’t you love this color palette from COLOURlovers? I wish our flag was made using these colors. Sorry America! Please don’t stone me for my blasphemous opinions.  I really do love our country and our colors… but sometimes, we get a little too cheesy with our patriotism. This 4th of July, let’s be patriotic in a classy way. Eh? Yeah? We’ll see what happens.

I’m so excited for the 3-day weekend! Yes, I am excited to catch up on sleep, but also just to get things done… and post the results! I’ll be kicking this weekend off with dinner with a friend tonight (I am Maid of Honor in her wedding, so I’m excited to talk about her upcoming pre-wedding in Vegas and lots and lots of other wedding planning things). Two of my cousins are flying down from Alaska to visit the family, so I’ll be seeing them on Saturday, yay! And, Sunday I will be spending quality time with my Orange County ladies. Time in between will be spent between web projects and sewing projects. Ugh! I can’t wait for the weekend to begin! Happy Thursday everyone!

“I want to go to there”: or, SF Pride

My lil sis registering to vote! SF Pride, 2009

This weekend was full of exercise, good TV show quotes, delicious food, laughter, amazing friends, the occasional naked or half naked person, and of course, PRIDE! My graduation gift to Ms. Riot Grrrl Jr. was a trip to the beautiful San Francisco. We picked an amazing weekend to visit! Not only was SF Pride happening, but it turns out, some other good friends were in town as well. I seriously have the best friends ever. I’m a lucky gal.

Indie Designer Spotlight

Happy Tuesday everyone! I recently learned about ALEX&RA and thought I’d start dedicating a few posts every month to indie designers that I think are doing great things in the wonderful world of apparel.

ALEX&RA_seashellskirt

ALEX&RA, designed by Alexandra Cipparone, is a very feminine line that reminds me of what I dream to find while thrifting. Her dresses and tops are lovely, but the pencil skirts are to die for (especially this one)! I absolutely love her color choices, cut and attention to detail that really make for a unique line. Her pieces have a refined retro flare that makes them timeless. Cipparone works and lives in San Francisco, CA (one of my favorite cities!) and has made her mark via her etsy shop. The fantastic thing about ALEX&RA is that each piece is hand made. Yay handmade revolution!

Alexandra explains, “My designs are largely influenced by my beautiful city of San Francisco, California and are made using fabrics that have a low-impact on the environment. Due to the success I found at Etsy, I decided to launch my own online shop, http://shop.alexandracipparone.com, where customers can now purchase directly through me. This gives me a better opportunity to connect with my customers and provide them with a better, more customized shopping experience.”

I think, as an Etsy seller myself, we all hope to become successful in our creative endeavors, as Alexandra has. How inspiring! So please check out ALEX&RA and help continue the handmade revolution. Stop buying mass produced items! Embrace individuality  and support independent designers. You’ll be happy you did.

(If you are an independent designer and you’d like to be featured, please contact me at info {at} tatianajimenez.com)

Do anything, but let it produce joy.

I made this laptop bag today for my good friend Katrina’s birthday! It’s so cute, I cut enough fabric to make two, so the second one should be up in the etsy shop sometime this week. Of course, it won’t be exactly the same as this one.

My lovely friend/coworker’s favorite artist is Renoir, and her favorite writer  is Walt Whitman, so as you can see I wanted to incorporate them into the bag. I used left over iron on paper from another project.

I lined the inside of the bag with leftover fabric from a diaper bag project from a while back (that I actually still haven’t finished). It’s a “Fun with Dick and Jane” print. :) I’m currently doing this thing where I’m not allowing myself to buy new fabric until I use as much as possible from what I already have. We’ll see how long I can go without making a trip to M&L Fabrics. Sorry this wasn’t the usual Upcycle project for today! This little bag took up a bit of my time. Now off to be techy and work on web stuff. Toodles and Happy Father’s Day!
