The theme for this week’s inspiration comes from two places: the world of hip hop and the world of jewelry.

Here’s a video I took 2 years ago of Andy Milonakis making an appearance and impressing us with his skillz during Steve Aoki’s set at the MSTRKRFT record release party.

Next we have a piece from independent jewelry brand Trixie Mayhem that I stumbled upon on Facebook. Her jewelry is gorgeous and macabre, two of my favorite things:

Lastly, it’s Friday night, and although I took a two hour nap (on accident! my alarm never went off) I’m still a bit loopy. ALSO, I am still in the honeymoon phase with my new iMac… here it is in all its shiny, sleek glory:

And as a result of being too excited about my new computer AND a pair of super cute kitty headphones from Late to the Revolution, I decided to make this animated gif. Can you make a cameo in your own blog? Probably not I guess. Please note that this gif goes quite well with Breath by Telepopmusik (included below). You’re welcome.

P.S. I’ll finally post pictures from the photoshoot that happened last month (eek!) and photos from Unique LA soon! Stay tuned.

It’s images like this that get me through the day sometimes. Image found via galadarling.

I’ve yet to write about it, but this past weekend was a boatload of fun, family and, errr… we’ll go with frolicking. My sisters and cousin drove up to visit for the weekend and we had a blast. So this entire week has been like coming down from a really fun party drug (which I promise I know nothing about). My apartment has been TOO quiet and there are a lack of snack foods, giggles, and watching of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. But life goes on… until the next sister/cousin weekend of course!

I almost fell out of my desk chair when I stumbled upon this amazing idea. 1-Up rugs? I am totally making one of these guys, but maybe a throw blanket version.

I’m always down for a smart chuckle.

Rommel breaks down the similarities between comedians and track and field athletes.

Twinkie Chan’s post about her trip to London’s Borough Market made me reeeeeeally miss London. Like, alot.

Lately I’ve been feeling like work – whether it’s my day job, freelance gigs, or projects for my craft biz – has taken over my life. It was nice and reassuring to read this post by Elsie Flannigan.

That’s all for this week! I hope your weekend is as bright and sunny! The weather in San Francisco has been quite pleasant… except for the fact that the temp has dipped down to really effing cold. The sun is deceiving.

It wasn’t really a lovely day for a picnic at all… I just like quoting Little Women as much as I possibly can. Anyway! I have the kind of fun task of designing the t-shirt for our annual company picnic. We’re doing a one color print on a Kelly green shirt. Not my usual task, but it is a challenge I have accepted and I hope I can pretend to be an illustrator and do my best. In the meantime, I’ve been looking at pretty picnicing pictures for inspiration (even though the shirts will look nothing like these). Enjoy!

I made this pasta alfredo with chard recipe for dinner for the first time and I think the ricotta cheese was infused with sleep serum or something because about 20 minutes after I finished eating I fell asleep on the couch while watching Small Time Crooks, which was actually really entertaining film. What up with that?

Sorry that video was kind of random, but I love it and it’s my blog and I thank you for reading it and tolerating my occasional loopy-ness.
Last night I was walking through BevMo and I did a double take when I passed by a case of Cable Car Beer. The powder blue, bright orange and retro type are not typically used in beer branding and it totally caught my eye. I mentioned it to a friend I was with and he thought it was a pretty rad label as well. The more I walked through BevMo, the more gorgeous labels I noticed. I’ll need to do a top 10 beer label designs soon, but for now, let us all admire the beautifully positioned and selected type treatments and expert layout on the Cable Car Beer label. Well done.

I love this. It isn’t so much a goal, but very good things to keep in mind. Don’t stress out. Life’s way too short. And also, never stop getting excited to create, whether it’s a hat, a tool shed in your backyard, or simply jotting down your thoughts in a journal.

2. Continue growing as a graphic designer and never stop wanting to learn or try new things. Also, never sell out or work on projects for organizations/companies I don’t believe in.

3. Learn to knit/crochet more complicated pieces. Along the same vein, I need to get my hands on a serger and expand my etsy shop to include one of a kind upcycled pieces. I can’t keep all of them to myself!

4. Lastly, for the purposes of this entry, but definitely not the last goal I have for 2010: learn how to develop WordPress themes from the ground up. It was one of my loose goals last year, but I’m going to buckle down and reach this goal hopefully come February. Wish me luck!

Miss Chicago and the California Girls, 1971
Poster produced by the Feminist Art Program, Fresno State College, Calif.
(Scanned from The Power of Feminist Art: The American Movement of the 1970s, History and Impact)

The above poster is from the beginning of the Feminist Art Program which was established by Judy Chicago when she accepted a teaching position at Fresno State. Chicago chose Fresno State because it was so isolated from the art world. She also decided that the program should operate off campus so her students could function in a space free from patriarchy. Chicago’s motivation was to help her students find a sense of self in their work, feel comfortable to create art, be open to formulate their own ideas and feel understood; all things that she felt she did not receive from her own arts education. As the story goes, finding a studio was incredibly difficult for the women, as landlords were ambivalent to rent space to them because they couldn’t understand why a group of women needed a space to do “work.” Chicago’s program at Fresno only lasted one year, since she was hired to co direct the Feminist Art Program at the California Institute of the Arts.

In related news, the Health Care Reform Bill was passed yesterday. Unfortunately the House included an amendment which would ban federal funding of abortion in the public option. This is lame and incredibly upsetting. If you are also upset by this decision, voice your opinion by sending a message to the President here: http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/hcr09bse_af?rk=g7z2JR1q7qDyE

In other maybe sort of not really related news, Miss Marissa (aka my fabulous roommate) has established a new blog that focuses on the San Francisco art scene, her favorite films, and photos that she takes around the city. I love it so far, you should check it out: http://artinthefog.wordpress.com/

I think it has been a year or so since I highlighted my favorite bloggers, many of whom have fallen off the map. When they stopped updating my mind went to a very morbid place. What happens to a blog once the author stops updating? What happened to the author? Omg, did they die? Did they include their login ID and password in their will so their loved ones could continue their legacies? Most likely not. Anyway, I hope they are alive and well.

We are slowly creeping toward the end of another year, so I feel like I should recognize other bloggers who have inspired me, entertained me and/or kept me informed this year. Cheers, kids.

A Beautiful Mess – The artist most commonly known as Elsie Cake is a crafter and painter extraordinaire. She is the commissioner of cute. Seriously. Every time she updates, I feel like I just walked out of the Sanrio store with a bag full of goodies – so happy. Her posts warm my heart and her play lists kick ass and inspire you to create.

Games of Dissonance – This blogger is a good friend of mine who is an urban planning enthusiast (and graduate) and really knows how to soak up her surroundings and appreciate the history and design in the cities and sights that most take for granted everyday. She’s also quite the philosopher.

i live here: SF – It never fails… every time I read this blog, I cry. Maybe not deep dramatic sobs, but I feel like each post is like a club that charges a one tear minimum. I’m a sucker for stories, people and romance. This blog captures all of the above, in very different ways than you may expect.

Just Creative Design – This Australian whiz kid is full of advice, creativity and techniques when it comes to the business of graphic design – all of which he is willing to share with the online community. He is incredibly talented and successful… and he’s only 21!

Indexed – I have been really into infographics lately (maps, charts, younameit). This blog takes infographics and makes them really fun and makes fun of topical subjects. It’s a place where math, art and humor collide.

NubbyTwiglet - I love Nubby’s design aesthetic. She is a gal who has a hanker for typography and she is super chic. She’s her own unique version of the gothic lolitas of Japan. I love her use of type, especially when she mixes fonts and uses just a hint of color… usually red. Absolutely beautiful. Her photos are always inspiring as well. And homegirl can work the platforms!

The Coveted – This blog serves two purposes, 1.) Fashion, 2.) Makeup. I usually skip the makeup updates, but I love jennine’s fashion-related posts.

The Sartorialist – I have become such a fan of this blog, as has a friend of mine. When she came to visit we both realized that we shared a love of his photography and subjects and decided to “sartorialize” those who we thought were creatively or impressively clothed on the streets of San Francisco with our cameras. NERD ALERT!

Trailer of Life – These ladies are a bucket of comedy and trash talk. Their updates are few and far between, but I feel like their lack of updates keeps me hungry for more. I have HUNGER PANGS, ladies! Check out their post Cookies vs. Chicken: The Showdown.

WelshGrl2 – Jaime is a writer and crafter who lives just north of San Francisco. She loves monsters and photography, and I’m lucky enough to call her my friend! We bond over our shared love of knitting and making stuff. She finds inspiration in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wales, and coffee.

What are some of your favorite blogs? What inpsires you? Do share.
