Howdy, kids! I know my last post was music-related, but here’s a lil playlist I put together today.

So, as some of you may know, summer has not quite hit San Francisco – it’s been 65 degrees and cloudy for the last 3 months. As such, I’m trying to keep the summer spirit alive (and hopefully not get too mopey with my vitamin D deficiency) in hopes that it will be warm and sweater-free soon (at least for a few weeks) with these songs that remind me of summertime. Enjoy!

Much a-buzz this week on the interwebs, as you may or may not have noticed, is the anticipation of Lady Gaga’s new video to be released Monday, June 7th for her single “Alejandro” from Fame Monster.

“Alejandro” has to be my least favorite song on Fame Monster, BUT I am nonetheless excited about the video. I missed the sneak-peak on Letterman and will have to check it out later, but from what I’ve read, the video has a “homoerotic military” theme. Sounds spicy. This song is in some ways reminiscent of Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita,” and before reading about the video, I imagined it to be a little more cinematic and Italian neo-realist (a la “Paparazzi”, but better filmed). I found this photo (above) via a Google image search that matches the video in my mind. Molto bella, no?

Last week (funny enough) while in the theater waiting to watch Sex and the City 2, my friend Kate and I started talking about how she recently became a fan of Gaga. We talked about why movies like SATC2 or the music of Gaga was so entertaining, while at the same time seemingly superficial and sugary, and how do we, as intelligent, educated women defend spending our dollars and investing our time in this “stuff”. Well, the answer is that sometimes (not really with SATC2, that discussion is for another blog entry entirely), you just have to respect someone who has the ability to create something that attracts the masses in a way makes them feel like the artist is speaking specifically to them. I feel like Gaga is a symbol of justification for the “outsiders” of society. Just watch Gaga’s interview on Oprah and after you’ve surprised yourself by crying, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Ultimately, (I know, I’ve gone on a tangent) regardless of what has been said, I think Gaga is talented (please watch her acoustic performances of “Paparazzi” or “Poker Face” on YouTube). And really, she’s just a lot of fun.

ANYWAY, “Alejandro,” Monday, video will be released. I wonder if any of her outfits will top this one:

We’ll see!

I’ve been listening to LastFM since 2006, and in these last four years, I have listened to this song 27 times (according to the nifty charts). This is a cover of one of my favorite Radiohead songs “Exit Music for a Film” by Vampire Weekend. I really love LastFm… it’s so much better than Pandora or Slacker Radio in my opinion. Give it a whirl. Befriend me!

In other news, I woke up early again so I decided, in efforts of being productive, I’ll head over to Starbucks and work on webby things. And I have been, while also being constantly distracted by adorable (and some not so adorable) children. It was cute for the first hour. I have resorted to my headphones and internet radio. Thank God for headphones. Anyway, work work and then a tennis tournament at 4pm. That’s right kids. I’ll be busting out my racket that has gone untouched for the last 5 years. Should be interesting. Here’s hoping I don’t pull too many muscles. Anyway, happy weekend!

But, hey, let’s forget all of the bad things that may have happened in 2009. It’s time to dance, have funny conversations with friends, and vomit confetti, like the Born Ruffians.

This is one of my favorite songs from this past year. I’m compiling a list of Songs to Get You Happy for 2010, coming soon. The audio equivalent of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, if you will. You’re welcome.

… some things go bad just because.

Hello world. Please please please watch the video. I was in a weird mood when I got home from work today… I attribute it to all of the sappy music I was listening to on the bus ride home. And then out of the blue this little diddy popped up on lastfm and cured my temporary blues. But then I thought about this song and got a little blue all over again. Music is so powerful.

Not to worry though. I have The Office and 30 Rock to watch in a little bit! Sorry my posts have been so few and far between lately, but I’ve been a busy gal. Been workin’ the new job which I love more than I can express here. So thankful and blessed. And I’ve been doing more freelance work which takes up mucho tiempo, as well as writing por el blog de televicion.

This weekend I have two visitors coming up for Halloween. Should be rad. We’ll see what kind of trouble* we can get into this weekend. Last weekend was fun. I need to write a blog update about it though. But I will say, I saw some really great art and had the best tamale… probably of my life. Stay tuned.

* Good, clean fun.

“reach[es] maximum commercial blast radius while maintaining its street bona fides.” – Entertainment Weekly

With 11 studio albums under his belt, Jay Z brings it (and brings it hard) with his latest album The Blueprint 3 which dropped today in the United States due to the album leakage on the interwebs, and is scheduled to be released internationally on the 14th of September. (Suckas!) My fellow HOVA-loving coworker and I listened to the album early last week when it was leaked online. It was fabulous. Jay Z is pretty much the best rapper in the world, AKA the self proclaimed “mothaf**kin greatest.”

Per usual, the Roc Boy worked with producers Kanye West and Timbaland on this album, as well as No I.D., The Neptunes and other notable producers. Some critics seem to be hating on Timbaland, and calling his style dated, more or less. I personally think that his work with Missy Elliott back in 1997 on her Supa Dupa Fly album was some of his best and most innovative.

Check out the video for D.O.A. (Death of Auto-tune) below. The video is pretty simple, but it does the song justice. Jay Z doesn’t need a video overly saturated with hos, money and Courvoisier. And as he exclaims in this song, the hip hop world needs to “get back to rap, you T-Pain’n too much.” Refreshing.
