From ‘Clit Cut’ to ‘Vag-esty’: Why Warpaint is my new favorite band.

Last fall I BARTed over to the Fox Theater in Oakland to see the oh-so-talented and amazing The xx. My friend Meg and I were fortunate to catch the opening band – Warpaint, a mellow all-girl band with really pretty harmonious voices and expert guitar riffs  – with surprise screaming rock out moments here and there. We were instantly in love. Fast forward to around 6 months later, and we’re watching them headline a sold out show at The Independent in San Francisco. I don’t know them personally, but I felt so fucking proud of them.

I think Meg and I agreed that what was so cool about seeing these gals as headliners was the fact that they seemed to be a lot more comfortable about showing their bubbly and fun personalities. We totally have friendship crushes on them. The thing that I thought felt sort of empowering about them was that their music is somewhat serious, but they weren’t afraid to do a booty dance onstage or start laughing when they felt like it. I love that.

Although I’d seen them once before, aside from watching a few YouTube videos, I didn’t know any of the lyrics to their songs, but the show was still a lot of fun. I really like to do that sometimes – go to a show without having listened to the artist’s album and purchasing it afterward. I get to relive the show all over again. The full-length album (The Fool) and the EP (Exquisite Corpse) are both glossy new additions to my iPhone playlist. I can’t stop listening. My favorite songs include: Elephants, Warpaint, Undertow, and Composure. Check them out! I promise you’ll fall in love as well.
