Sewing to the 80s

I’ve taken a mini break from crocheting to work on this dress that I’m planning on wearing to a work party. Yay! I haven’t sewn a dress from scratch in… er… well over a year. That is not good! This past weekend I went fabric shopping with a friend and found this fabulous mustard fabric that totally works for a vintage pattern that I bought at a vintage expo a few years ago. It’s a super cute 1960′s buttoned dress. I’ll post more photos when it’s complete! For now, you get this teaser photo.

As much as I love crocheting in front of the TV, I really do love sewing and listening to The Cure station on Pandora. Serious ear candy… Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins, and my beloved New Order. Music is so inspiring, but I probably didn’t need to tell you that.

Somewhat Lazy Saturday

Happy Daylight Savings! The clock just struck 2am on my clock and 1am on my computer. I am super tired, but really excited about the new/old music I have acquired thanks to the mister and am revisiting the album Give Up by The Postal Service. Ahhh, freshman year at UC Irvine. Livin’ in Prado. How I miss it, but not too much.

Today was somewhat of a “couch potato” day. I haven’t watched that much TV in a really long time. I think I started with the LA Ink marathon, Millionaire Matchmaker, then 16 and Pregnant, onto some movies – Welcome to the Dollhouse and California Suite. After that it starts to get blurry. Although I sat on the couch all day (except for that part of the day I spent traveling to and from the Post Office and seeking out cupcakes), I was knitting up a storm. Yes, knitting. I’ve been crocheting like a madwoman (if madwomen crochet) for a few weeks and decided to switch it up for a day. It was nice until I realized how much longer it takes to knit an item vs. crocheting it. Hot damn. But, in the end, knitting worked out better for this project (seen above). It should be launching in the shop in the next week or so. Keep an eye out! I’m really excited about it.

DIY Hello Kitty Halloween Costume

This DIY costume is a little more Sandra Lee than Martha Stewart in that it’s semi-homemade. I’ve been a little obsessed with Hello Kitty lately… wait… LIES… I’ve been obsessed with Hello Kitty ever since the day my mom pushed my stroller into the Sanrio store at the Montebello Mall in the 1980s. Recently I’ve embraced my obsession, in what some would call a semi-obnoxious way. Halloween definitely gave me an excuse to exploit my love for this timeless icon. read more »
