Birthday Month – Embarking Upon My 28th Year

“How old are you now?” – my dad asks me, pretty much every year on my birthday. This year I answered, “28,” since that is technically my age (I still feel 24, just smarter), and he replied with a face that read “hot damn, ouch, oh lord help you, you’re getting old,” and then I gave him my faux mal de ojo and we chowed down on some Fresh Banana Cheesecake and everything was dandy.

Actual cheesecake, shortly before it was devoured.

I feel like 28 is going to be a great year, and apparently my Chinese horoscope agrees with this (hey fellow rats!). Here are some other things that happened this month:

1.) Casino time with Mom

San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino in San Bernardino, CA

$50 in free play from your local casino? Why wouldn’t you want to go?! I did and won a nice chunk o’change. Most importantly I got to spend the day hanging with my Mom, which was the best part. The buffet was also a plus. In addition to having too much fun at the penny slots, it was great to be home visiting family and friends… and finally try that Buffalo Wild Wings place I keep seeing on the TV.

2.) Handmade Birthday Cards

“Hold on tight, spider monkey.

Each year I receive a handmade birthday card from Cathy. Last year’s featured Lil Jon and a ilustrated version of me vomiting from drinking to many “Shots, shots, shots, shots, shots!” This year I’m being admired by one Edward Cullen. Much more pleasant, right?

3.) Hanging with Rocio

Roc and I in a great vintage furniture shop on Valencia Street

My good friend Rocio was in the Bay Area for a conference, so we got to hang out! Always great to see her. We explored the fun shops on Valencia Street and later ordered in because it was FREEZING outside.

4.) House of Prime Rib

I first learned about House of Prime Rib on No Reservations and wanted to check it out immediately… this was almost 3 years ago, so it was about time I went. I figured my birthday would be the best time to drag my friends with me — and in actuality, everyone was really stoked to go, which was awesome. It was not a disappointing experience. That salad! Those cocktails! That cute corn bread thing! I need to go again, and soon.

5.) A Gift to Myself

So, this is what I got myself for my birthday. Don’t even act like you don’t buy yourself birthday gifts. And don’t make me reference “Treat Yo Self” and force you to watch the YouTube video. (Side note: Can Parks and Rec come back now, please?) Anyway, a friend I highly respect suggested this book, so I picked up a copy and am SO HAPPY I did. It’s pretty stellar.

6.) Cathy in SF!

My good friend Cathy road-tripped up to San Francisco to celebrate her birthday (yay, fellow Pisces!). She drove up with her BF, and our friend Maggie from college drove up from San Jose to spend the day in the city. (Anteater reunion!) We all went to Alcatraz (which explains the ever-so-stylish ponchos in the photo) and it was a soggy morning… particularly for those of us who decided against wearing rain boots (ahem, me). Anyway, it made for another great memory with these ladies and I want them to come back ASAP… or move here. Moving here would be more than acceptable.

And that concludes my birthday month, 2012! Thanks to everyone who made it extra special.

The Graduation Blanket

Two months ago, around the time I temporarily fell off of the blogosphere, my baby sister graduated from high school! Gah, I feel old. Anyway, it’s an important milestone, so I decided that a thoughtless gift like a Betsey Johnson handbag would not do the trick (although I’m sure she’d have no qualms about receiving that), so I decided to make her a special afghan. read more »

Viktor & Rolf vs. Bath & Body Works

Over at Casa Jimenez, my family decided that since my sister will be getting married in 2011, we should cut back on spending at Christmas. There are 6 people in my family, so things can get a little pricey. We decided that it would be best to pull names from a hat this year.

Then, I think we all independently decided to STILL buy things for the other family members whose names we did not pull, by calling it a “stocking stuffer”. So I bought a bunch of cool stuff from Japantown (my new favorite SF neighborhood) for my mom and sisters and got my Dad a Starbucks gift card… because, really, what is my Dad gonna do with a Hello Kitty change purse, or cute facial tissues? Anyway, my mom, being the straightforward woman she is, just sent me an email asking me what I wanted from “SantaMom.” I made a pretty comprehensive list which included things I will not buy myself, one item in particular being:

Flowerbomb by Viktor and Rolf, which retails for around $125 at Walgreens

So, because my Mom is totally awesome and my bargain shopping guru, she did not buy me Flowerbomb but INSTEAD bought me this bad boy:

Black Amethyst by Bath & Body Works, retails around $15

When I pulled it out of my stocking, I was like… what is this? But then I smelled it… and to my surprise it smelled ALOT like Flowerbomb. How did she do it? “How did you do this!?” I asked my Mom. And she responded “I just picked the fragrance at Bath & Body Works that smelled the stuffiest.” Despite the slight jab at my preference in fragrance, she did a really great job. We laughed, I sprayed the Black Amethyst and shook my head in half amazement, half embarrassment. It was a pretty great Christmas.

Cotton Candy Slippers for Mom

This past weekend when I was at home my mom asked me to make her a pair of booties the way our boonia (grandma) used to make them, with a puff on top. She had this pink, purple and blue glittery cotton candy-esque yarn that she never used, so I crocheted it up and made these for her! She totally loves them, and I do too. When I started making them I wasn’t really sure how they’d turn out because a.) I never really use multi-colored yarn and b.) those colors aren’t really my style… but as it turns out, I kind of proved myself wrong. Also, the big puff is as adorable as it is funny at the top of the slippers. Kind of reminded me of the munchkins of Oz.

We’re baaaaaack

I just landed in Long Beach and am currently in el coche con mi familia. We’re on the 605 (or “on 605″ as the NorCal kids would say) and on the hunt for food. Since I was running a bit late to the airport all I had to eat was Skittles Crazy Cores (which are not crazy at all, they taste pretty normal) and Terra Blue potato chips, which are arguably the best part of flying Jetblue. Anyway, here’s a pic my sister took with her fancy Samsung Rogue phone which has a one-up on my iPhone 3G since she has flash capability. Whatevs. Here are my sister Cheech and me in the car. I’m so excited to be home for a few days. Hooray!
